Let's Make A Butterfly Mobile

Having butterflies flitting around above you at home makes things spring-like and cheery, even during April showers. Little Charley Bear is all about using your imagination, and once you’ve made this Butterfly Mobile, it’ll be easy to pretend you have real butterflies flying around your house! If you hang it by an open window, they’ll flit gently in the breeze. Click here to watch The Little Charley Bear Let's Make a Butterfly Mobile video.

Step 1

Step 1

.

Squirt the different colours of paint into a paint tray or palette and paint your little one’s hands, one at a time, with different colours – they can direct you, asking you to paint a finger yellow, or a palm red…

Step 1

Step 2

.

Once both hands are covered, encourage your child to splay his or her palms wide, with his thumbs and index finger almost forming a right angle. Make a firm print with the right hand, and then move the paper round, so that the base of the palm on the left hand meets the base of the printed right hand. The printed thumbs should make antennae!

Step 1

Step 3

.

Make a few butterflies this way. Your child can even move his or her fingers up and down on the paper, so that the wings are less defined. Once they’re dry, cut butterfly shapes around the forms your child has created.

Step 1

Step 4

.

To make up the mobile, take two coat hangers and cross them together to make a frame. Secure the top and bottom together with picture-hanging wire.

Step 1

Step 5

.

Once you have the framework for your mobile, hang the butterflies from it, as directed by your child. Knot pieces of white or coloured thread and use a needle to thread one butterfly on to each, with the knot on the underside of the painted butterfly. Have the threads at various lengths and tie the butterflies to the frame in whatever formation your child wishes. Use more picture-hanging wire to secure the frame and its butterflies to the ceiling or a high spot.
